FRANCESCA RILEY
The Midlife Maestro |

My
coaching career began when, at the age of 20, I
stepped into a gymnasium filled with eager 8 - 9 year
olds, armed with a whistle, wearing a pair of Addidas
and hoping that my two years of teacher training had
well prepared me to teach Physical Education to
elementary school students. At that time, I was
beginning my career as a teacher, coaching
basketball, soccer and track and field.
Since that first teaching experience, I've done many
things. I completed my Bachelor of Arts (in Applied
Social Science) at Concordia University in Montreal,
Quebec. Later, I earned my Master of Science in
Counseling (Career/Life Planning) at California State
University, Hayward. Completing two degrees in two
countries taught me a lot about the different and
complex expectations people have of us in today's
demanding and fast-paced world.
Since completing my graduate degree, I have worked
as the Director of a shelter for battered women,
Coordinator/Instructor of projects designed to help
women re-enter the labor market and as an
Immigration Officer for the Federal Government. For
the past 12 years, I have been working at Dawson
College, first as the Counselor for Continuing
Education students and then as Program
Coordinator/Instructor/Mentor for adults in retraining
programs.
In the year 2000, I was introduced to coaching when
I saw Cheryl Richardson, appear on Oprah. I had
always known that what I was doing with students
and clients was not just counselling--it was more
involved than that--but I didn't have a name for it
until I heard Cheryl speak. I felt that all of my
experiences had put me squarely on the path to
becoming a coach - a light bulb moment! I joined a
local Lifestyle Makeover Group and met a woman, a
coach-in-training. When we got together outside
the group, she generously spent over an hour
explaining to me what coaching meant to her.
I was
hooked!
As The Midlife Maestro, a life transitions coach, I
work with people who are experiencing transitions of
their own - career change, divorce, menopause
empty nest syndrome. Transitions involve change -
something that most of like to avoid at any cost. If
the change is one that you brought on yourself -
getting married, having a child, changing jobs - then
you feel that you have some control over the
process. However, if the change has been forced
upon you - job terminated, spouse requesting a
divorce, your child going off to university - the
process of change is much harder as you believe that
you have no control over it.
As your Life Transitions Coach, I am your guide,
mentor, sounding board and accountability partner as
you make your way through the process of
transition. What do you want to change in your
life? Do you want to do it alone or would you like the
assistance of an experienced coach to help make the
process a little easier.
