Traci Williams
Semantech Communications |
|
For the past 16 years, I have been working as a translator and editor, translating various texts from French, German
and Spanish into English. In 1998, I paired up with my partner, a translator with over 25 years' experience of translation
from English and German into French, to create Semantech Communications, along with a network of translators who work into
their respective mother tongues (German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, etc.)
Semantech Communications is a translation and editing company that specializes in the "dry stuff", namely medical,
financial, technical and legal - thus our tagline "Specialized language skills for specialists".
I count myself incredibly lucky to be in a job I love. Life is strange though since it was not my initial choice
of career.
As a young girl growing up in Burlington, Ontario, I would point out mistakes in the "French-tinged" English coming
out of Quebec. Little did I know that would be part of what I do for a living!
I initially had my heart set on becoming a veterinarian, so I took all the science and math courses available. I
also took all the courses in English and foreign languages. I excelled in language, but did not consider it a career option
at the time.
I worked as a vet's assistant for two years, becoming quite proficient at doing minor surgery myself and assisting
in major surgery. I applied to Guelph Veterinary School, only to be told that my 93% average was not high enough. However,
shortly after that, I met a scientific translator, and changed my career path. Up to that point, I had always seen translators
as being only "artsy" and "literary" types.

The
Canadian Taxation of Dividend Income
2004
Peak Small Business Center
The economist hopes for a tax system that is
neutral-that is, a system that does not affect the
way that economic decisions are made. Equally
important, if the tax system is to be equitable for all,
the tax burden should not change merely because of
the form in which these decisions are implemented.
In most industrialized countries, however,
compromises must be made. The taxation of business
income often represents such a compromise. Profit
earned by a corporation is taxed; then, when the
after-tax profit is distributed in the form of dividends,
it is taxed again in the hands of the shareholder.
